Piano International. The BEST
publication for and about pianists past and present, piano music,
disc reviews, performance and competition announcements and
critiques. www.pianomagazine.com On
the Sensation of Tone- (As a Physiological Basis for the
Theory of Music). by Herman Helmholtz. 1877 4th ed.
Translated by Alexander J. Ellis. 1885.2nd ed. Dover
Publications. www.doverpublications.com
An absolute must for not only tuners but musicians to see
how 19th century science viewed such concepts as hearing, tone,
harmonics, beats, historic and ethnic music systems, history
of pitch standards, methods of determining frequency of pitches
before electronic instruments, histories of tuning systems such as
Meantone and Equal Temperament. AJ Ellis is the inventor of
"cents" and presents the concept in his appendices of his
translation.

Piano Tuning and Allied
Arts William Braid White 5th ed.1946 If there is a
"bible" for piano tuners this is it. First published in 1917 and
running through 5 editions until 1946, it is still as contemporary
as all the other books on tuning and regulation published since
the 1970's. My copy shows a twentieth printing in 1975.

Piano Servicing, Tuning, &
Rebuilding - for the professional, the Student, the
Hobbyist. Arthur Reblitz. 1976. Ok there are two
bibles. There is a second edition published in the
90's. Can be seen in most local
libraries. Indispensable for the aspiring tuner. Excellent
reference for the pro.

FOOTNOTES. I can't claim this one---only that I saw it on a billboard in
South Carolina advertising a barbeque and meat
market. "You never sausage a place". I can't remember the
name or location or I would certainly give credit where credit is
due. "Die Wurst" comments Stan Ryberg editor of "The Wippen Post"
the newsletter of the Chicago chapter of PTG. ---rm back |
